Good working knowledge of Malayalam language has become a must for securing government jobs in Kerala with the State Public Service Commission (PSC) accepting the government recommendation in this regard.
A meeting of the PSC board here on Monday has agreed to incorporate this condition in their notifications for various jobs in the government. As per the decision, candidates, who have not studied Malayalam either as a first or second language in Class 10 or Class 12, will have to pass a special language examination if they have to be made permanent.
The eligibility test, which will be equivalent to a Class 10 Malayalam examination, will be conducted by the PSC.Students studying the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE) syllabus do not have to study Malayalam as they have other options like taking Hindi, French or Special English as their language elective subjects.
The government had given the proposal based on the recommendations of the State Cultural Committee. The committee wanted questions for courses like engineering, medicine and IT, in which admissions are made through entrance tests, to be made available in Malayalam along with an option to write answers in Malayalam.
The committee has also recommended introduction of Malayalam in courts and in all sectors at the academic level. It has also mooted scholarship to foreigners to study the vernacular language. Foreigners contributing to the upliftment of Malayalam will be felicitated with an award in the name of Herman Gundert.
The move is in tune with the government’s efforts to seek classical status for Malayalam.

In my opinion, every students should receive basic education (reading, writing, and arithmetic) in mother tongue which she /he is most familiar with.Mother tongue is the best medium for the expression of one's ideas and feelings. The Kerala Government current decision is a very good step to democracy and for the welfare of common people of Kerala .The teaching of the mother tongue is important because on it depends the growth of our students. According to official figures, there are 12,649 schools in the state, of which 4,501 are government schools, 7,284 are aided schools and 864 are unaided schools. Besides these, there are 764 CBSE and 108 ICSE schools.The government should take necessary action to those English medium schools which did not teach Malayalam as a paper in their schools.The ultimate solution is to ban English medium education from Kerala and give education through mother tongue up to Ph.D level .
